Where is the best place to purchase locks? That seems like an easy question to answer, however it might be more difficult than you think. There are many questions to answer before a good decision can be made. The first and most obvious is: what type of lock are you looking for? Is it padlocks or door locks or are you looking for a specialty product such as cam or switch locks.

Let’s take this one step at a time.

When buying a door or deadbolt lock at a big box store, buy the best that you can afford. All of these locks are not created equal. Look for those that are made of a high quality material and have a steel locking bolt with at least a 1″ throw for the deadbolt. Also, make sure that the finish is high quality, some manufacturers offer warranties on the finish. When choosing remember that for the most part the higher the price the better the lock. The most important question is who or what are you trying to protect and what are they worth to you.

 

I have talked a lot about both not only in this article, but in others that I have written, so what is the difference?

• A big box store is just that a very large warehouse type building with rows and rows of merchandise. Their lock section is usually a whole row with many types of door locks. You usually will not get expert help in making your selection and you cannot get these locks custom keyed. Many of the lock codes will repeat themselves; this means that someone else will have your key. If you need a lock quickly and know what you want then a big box store is for you.
• A service center can provide all types of locks, they can custom assemble them to your exact specifications and provide expert help in choosing your product and security level. A service center is a specialized operation, they operate through the web and phone, some have on-line stores and they ship globally.
