Try Opening Antique Locks Before Calling a Locksmith in Nobleton, Ontario

Try Opening Antique Locks Before Calling a Locksmith in Nobleton, Ontario

Try Opening Antique Locks Before Calling a Locksmith in Nobleton, Ontario

We all know someone with an old vintage steamer trunk in their house that’s locked up tight just because the keys have disappeared—maybe that person is you! Luckily, depending on the type of lock on your antique trunk, you might be able to open it yourself. Read on for an overview of the two most common types of vintage trunk locks from a locksmith in Nobleton, Ontario.

Warded locks

Take a look at the history of padlock security and you will come across the warded lock design. This is the kind of antique lock you can picture a stereotypical old key unlocking, but the warded lock keyway and key are often confused for components of a lever lock. It was often much easier to make warded locks for steamer trunks, so it’s highly unlikely you’ll see a lever lock design on an antique trunk.

Warded locks may look complicated, but they’re not. This type of lock’s locking mechanism is not very complex—you might try unlocking it yourself before calling a professional for help. Here are some tips:

  • Identify a warded lock: Keys for warded locks have very defined rectangular grooves and a rounded shaft, and are usually flat. The keyways (keyholes) on warded locks have a lot of open space inside. Take a look inside the keyhole and you will not see wafers, pins or any mechanisms.
  • Open a warded lock: Special warded lock picks are designed to pick open the locking mechanism on your antique steamer trunk’s warded lock (note that warded padlocks will need a skeleton key). The good news is that the notches on warded keys only exist to keep the key from slipping past the interior wards, so there’s room to maneuver inside the keyway. All it should take are a few twists here and there to pop open the lock.

Pin tumbler locks

The majority of antique trunks will not have a pin tumbler design, but that’s not to say yours doesn’t. There are a couple reasons why your trunk might have this type of lock. First, you might actually own a more modern steamer trunk that’s simply meant to resemble an antique trunk. Another possibility is that the chest itself is old, but the original hardware has been replaced. Even though the pin tumbler lock design is going to be more difficult to open than a warded lock, the unlocking process is not too complicated for a professional locksmith:

  • Identify a pin tumbler lock: This type of trunk lock is most likely a padlock. Keys for pin tumbler locks have dips and grooves down the blade all the way to the shoulder of the key. This design keeps the key from being inserted too far inside the keyhole. If you want to see the pins inside, shine a light directly into the keyway and take a look.
  • Open a pin tumbler lock: Unless you know the basics of lock picking, opening this lock may be impossible. Your best chance at unlocking an antique trunk with a pin tumbler lock and not causing damage is to hire a locksmith in Nobleton, Ontario to do the job.

Changing the Locks when you Move to a New House

Changing the Locks when you Move to a New House

Changing the Locks when you Move to a New House

Having your locks changed when you move is a basic security measure that is advised by most insurance companies. However a whopping 74% of people do not change the locks when they move house! If an intruder gains entry to your home with a key then most home insurance policies won’t pay out, as there needs to be a clear sign of a breaking and entering for you to make a valid claim. You may also want to check what your insurance policy says about the type of locks you use for your home. Most insurers require you to have Canadian Standard’ locks installed; Canadian Standard uses a kitemark to indicate that the lock has been certified by the Canadian Standard Institution. A Canadian Standard is the minimum standard that a product such as a cylinder must be manufactured in accordance with before it is recognise by the relevant authorities as a quality product. If you have a lock fitted that does not meet the standard required by your insurer then you will not get a pay-out.

However, when you move you need to think about more than the insurance implications. You could be leaving yourself and your family vulnerable as you don’t know who else has a key to your house. Even if the previous owners have assured you that all the keys have been left, they may have forgotten a set, or not told you about a lost set. It’s better to be safe than sorry, get your locks changed!

Additional Security Measures

You can protect your home with more than just new locks; there are several measures you can take to keep your new home secure including things that go inside and outside your new house.

The first and easiest thing you can do is to leave your valuables out of sight. Even when you first move and there are thing everywhere, make sure things like laptops, tablets and jewellery are not visible from the windows. Install blinds as quickly as possible to give yourself and your items some privacy.

Installing outdoor security lights is another great way to secure your home. As most burglars like the cover of darkness, having motion sensor lights that shine brightly when they are triggered could be enough to scare them away. Make sure your security lights are pointed towards the areas that a burglar will target; the shed, garage or gate.

As you are changing the locks anyway, you might want to spend a little bit more money on high security locks. Many people nowadays have uPVC doors with euro locks which are vulnerable to a break in technique called ‘Lock Snapping’. This is a common tactic used by burglars, but you can upgrade your lock to an ‘Anti-Snap’ one that is specifically designed to prevent this method of entry. You should purchase a lock that meets the TS007 3 star standard, such as ABS High Security Cylinders. Learn more about Lock Snapping here.

To specifically protect your front door you can install a door chain or letterbox guard. A door chain is a small chain attached to the door frame, which attaches to a track on the door. This will help prevent someone getting in even if the door is unlocked; however you have to be inside the house to make use of the chain. Used in conjunction with a Canadian Standard lock, this gives you a good level of security. A letterbox guard protects you from an intruder who may use a ‘fishing’ technique used by burglars. Potential intruders will use the letter box and a long piece of metal to access keys that may have been left by the front door. Once they have them, they simply unlock the door and have access to your house. Learn more about additional home security here.

So…

There is nothing that can make your house 100% secure; however by taking some simple measures you can deter thieves. You can start by looking for houses that have sturdy doors and windows or think about replacing them if they are warn or old. Once you’re in, it’s up to you how many security measures you put in place. Having the locks changed is the best thing you can do to keep your new home secure. Hiring a professional locksmith to fit these is the only way to be sure that your locks are insurance compliant, Xpress Locksmith offer a free home security check with every job we do, so if you book us in for the day you move we can appraise your home and advise on what you can do to keep the burglars away. Talk to the locksmith about anti-snapping locks and any other doors you need securing, such as a garage, gate or shed as our engineers carry a wide variety of locks on board. Toronto Sliding Door Installation Tips

As a business you need to take special care when choosing a company to manage your sliding glass door installation. Companies around the world use these doors over others, providing convenience, beauty and easy access for customers to access their store or building.

The advantage to these products is when automated, they can reduce the cold air from entering the property and the warm air escaping during winter and the cool air escaping during the summer months. This can dramatically reduce energy consumption as the heating or cooling units don’t have to work overtime when the doors are accidentally left open.

It’s important that any company you choose for a sliding glass door installation has a stellar reputation in the area. The company should have years of knowledge and experience and have worked in the area for many years.

The best place to find companies such as this is online. The internet has made it possible to find anything online, including a quality sliding glass door installation expert.

When you find a few companies, it’s advisable to get them all in to provide you with an estimate.

Ensure the estimate is in writing with a breakdown on labor and parts, so you can compare them against each other later on.

Price is going to be a big deciding factor, but don’t let it be your only deciding Toronto Sliding Door Installation Tips factor. In some cases you may pay a slightly higher price for a knowledgeable and experienced team than you would for a company who has only been in the industry a few months and is desperate for the work.

Always ensure that the price you are quoted for sliding glass door installation includes some form of guarantee or warranty. This should cover the labor and parts, offering you peace of mind.

The quality of the products being offered should be superior and able to withstand continuous traffic. Remember if you are placing these at the entrance to a shopping mall, for example, you are going to have a lot more traffic than if they were being placed at the entrance to a commercial business.

Once you have all the estimates in hand, you can take the time to go through each one. Any which is way over or under prices should be eliminated from the pile; the pricing shouldn’t be too different between the various companies, especially if they are all quoting on a similar product that they can provide.

Try and choose a company that also offers a repair service.

This enables you to use one company whether it’s for your sliding glass door installation or repairs to that or any other doors you may have. Once you have a company you can trust, it’s much easier to pick up the phone and know your business is in good hands.

Always pay careful attention to their professionalism, customer service and attention to detail. The team that arrives to handle the install should be professional, friendly and respectful. They should also be trustworthy, as you are giving them access to your business.

See how they answer the phone and how quickly your inquiry is dealt with.

What was the representative like that came to give you an estimate? Did they try and force you into buying or were they courteous and obliging, answering your questions without hesitation?

It’s very important to take all these factors into consideration, enabling you to decide on the company you feel will benefit your business in the long run. Being able to form a long lasting business relationship is a win-win for you and the door company.

Toronto Commercial Door Closer

Toronto Commercial Door Closer

Toronto Doors Repair 866-820-1331

Toronto Commercial Door Closer

Door closers are an important feature in commercial/office buildings. Manual Toronto Commercial Door Closerdoor closers are used to shut exterior doors automatically without the use of electricity. They are installed for two major reasons. First, door closers are a security feature because they ensure that doors close whether human force is applied or not. Second, they help ensure that fire cannot spread from one part of a building to another or from one building to another during a fire emergency. A secondary reason to install door closers is to keep indoor air inside and outdoor air and weather outside.

Contractors recommend that door closers be installed on every exterior door on a building.

They are especially important on fire exit doors and/or doors which are typically only opened from the inside (i.e. doors with crash bars.) In fact, many cities and regions require that they be installed on commercial doors. Door closers are often installed on interior doors as well. As with exterior doors, they ensure an extra barrier of protection against the spread of fire. They may also be installed on doors as a way to limit the transfer of noise from one part of a building to another or one room to another, should someone forget to close a door behind him.

Manual commercial door closers are manufactured in two major styles:

Overhead mounted and jamb mounted (concealed.) Both function slightly differently but produce the same end result. Overhead mounted manual commercial door closers are attached to the frame of the door and to the door itself. It takes the energy exerted by the force of the opening of the door and stores it briefly. It then releases that energy to close the door. Hydraulic dampers or springs inside the mechanism prevent the door from slamming shut and controls the speed at which the door closes. This speed and control can be adjusted depending on how the damper or spring is manufactured.

Jamb mounted or concealed door closers work on the same basic principle as the overhead variety.

However, as the name implies, jamb mounted closers are hidden from view. They are mounted between the door and the inner part of the doorframe and are completely invisible when the door is closed. Speed and control can also be adjusted on many models depending on function or preference.

Since both types of manual commercial door closers work the same, choosing one style over the other is usually a matter of preference. When aesthetics are a factor, concealed closers are less obtrusive than the overhead mounted type. However, concealed closers can sometimes cost a little more (though this isn’t a hard and fast rule.) Generally speaking, if aesthetic appearance isn’t an issue, overhead commercial closers are usually sufficient, especially when it comes to fire doors or doors which the public does not typically have access to. Sometimes though, especially when it comes to interior doors in commercial buildings in which aesthetic appearance is especially important (i.e. heritage buildings), concealed closers won’t mar the facade. Many manufacturers, such as LCN, produce manual commercial door closers in different finishes in both types. This makes it easier to find one that fits appropriately with the decor of the building.
