Kitchener High Security Lock

It’s one thing to know that a front door isn’t doing it’s job unless it’s fitted with a secure lock. It’s a whole other to know what makes a secure. With so many locks on the market today, not all of them offer genuine high-security. Yet everyone thinks their locks are secure. How do you know what to look for? Find out in five minutes.

Long gone are the days when a hairpin or a bent coat-hanger could pick any Kitchener High Security Locklock. Incredibly, mortice locks – the ones requiring a large chunky key – are still around. For the most part modern locks have become more complicated to pick. Torpedo shaped tumbler pins are one way that modern locks thwart picking. Although by no means do all modern locks enjoy this security benefit. Nevertheless burglars have developed numerous other methods of overcoming a lock and it is these dangers as much as anything else that the best locks are now designed to defeat.

Advances in lock technology seem to be met with new ways of breaking front door locks.

Bumping, drilling, or snapping of locking cylinders are now highly prevalent methods of forcing entry through a front door. They each require tools, and as such true high security locks have reach an impressive level of sophistication.

The best new high-security front door locks from leading companies feature mechanisms designed to thwart drilling and bumping. Firstly, hardened steel rods in the locking cylinder body and core itself increase resistance to drilling. Furthermore, hardened steel tumbler pins increase resistance to tampering and core extraction.

New high-security locking mechanisms have been developed in addition to those inside the core locking cylinder. Machined metal deadbolts increase impact resistance but the really impressive modern locks feature hooks. When a door is locked, from two to four machined metal hooks are thrown into metal keeps in the door frame. These provide greatly increased structural resistance to brute force. In addition, they are not affected by successful tampering of the main locking cylinder. That’s right folks. If your main lock is somehow overcome, hook locks provide a further line of defence in your front door.

Yet another high-security feature in modern front doors is the use of a dual-spindle in the locking mechanism. In reality more of an innovation than a technology, a dual spindle will allow the internal door handle to lock and unlock the door independently of a key, while from the outside a key is needed to open the door. For example, if you wanted to lock your door from the inside, but couldn’t find your key, the internal door handle alone can be used to lock the door. From the outside the door is locked, and a key is then required to open it. It might seem like a small addition, but add this feature to a high security composite door and you’ve got a well-rounded door fit to be called high-security.

What Are High Security Locks?

I have discussed high security keys and locks in the past, but what makes a lock and key high security? A lot of manufacturers consider at least some of the locks they manufacture high security. So how do you know that you are getting what you pay for? Because you will pay far more for one of these locks than a regular lock that you can buy at your local big box store.

Here are some of the things to look for in a high security lock:
  • The locks and keys will be precision made, usually High Security Locks Kitchenerwith a CNC machine rather than die casting
  • They are usually made out of brass or steel
  • If brass, they will have hardened steel pins embedded into the lock face for drill protection
  • The keyway and key should be protected with Canada and foreign patents
  • The key blanks should be restricted to Service Centers and Locksmiths that are under contract to the manufacturer for the purpose of key control

The above list is not all inclusive but meant to provide the major points. There are a few items that I will explain further in an effort to give definition to some of the words used above that may not be familiar to all.

In the simplest form, a keyway is a design on a key such as key cuts, spacing and angles and the matching design that is manufactured into the lock cylinder. Some manufacturers use a combination of cuts, spacing and angles along with grooves cut into one or both sides of the key. These side grooves will match the grooves in the lock. When applying for a patent these are the items that are usually patented.

Key Control:

This is the ability to control not only the key blanks but also the cut keys. To demonstrate this let’s assume that the manufacturer sends 10 key blanks to one of their Service Centers. That service center cuts 10 key blanks to a secure code for one of their customers. That customer receives the 10 cut keys and records to whom they give them to. Throughout this process the keys can be accounted for all the way to the end user.

All of this comes at a price that will be at least 50% higher than a standard lock used for the same purpose. This goes back to that same question; what are you trying to protect and how much is that worth to you.

High Security Locks – What Are They and Should You Care?

Ever take a look at the locks on your front door? Do they have a nice shiny brass finish? Do you have a keyed entry? Well, if you’re like most people then your locks are branded either Kwikset or Schlage or some no-name brand. What most people don’t know is that these locks are just as good as no lock. A complete amateur can manipulate these locks within seconds. Not to mention using brute force would require no skill at all but would get the job done right away.

So what can you do?

Well, there are solutions; and one of the best solutions is installing high security locks instead of your cheap locks from Home Depot or Lowes.

These high security locks are offered by a few brands;

Mul-T-Lock and Medeco are the most popular. I personally prefer Mul-T-LockGuelph High Security Locks so I will be focusing mainly on their product line. First I would like to talk about what makes a high security lock so special; For starters these locks are very difficult to pick and manipulate, in other words, the same amateur that can pick a Kwikset or a Schlage within seconds will have no idea where to even begin with these high security locks. Their build quality is exceptional and unlike the cheaper locks they are built from solid brass. The keys that come along with high security locks are non-duplicate keys. I’m sure many of you have seen non-duplicate keys before, but it’s not enough to just stamp “Do not duplicate” on a key. These high security keys come along with a special code card (looks similar to a credit card); this card contains the information required to duplicate a key. In other words, only you can authorize making additional copies of your key. This is usually referred to as key control.

As an example I would like to discuss some of the features offered on Mul-T-Lock’s Grade 1 High security Deadbolt from their Hercular series. This deadbolt is complete solid brass and weighs a couple of pounds. The lock is pick proof, bump proof, tamper proof and drill proof. There are hardened steel inserts to prevent drilling the lock cylinder. There is a metal shield covering the mechanism preventing and attempt at ice-picking. And just to top it off, they added a special feature to the bolt itself. There is an interlocking steel ball placed on the bolt. Once the bolt is in a locked position, these steel balls are pushed outwards, interlocking with the strike box. This means that even using brute force with a screwdriver or a crowbar will become a much more difficult task.

High security locks are obviously more expensive than your standard lock; but it’s true what they say – “You get what you pay for!” – These locks offer real value in security rather than close to none. They offer a variety of features and functions that make them worth their price tag. I should also mention that they also come with a lifetime warranty on all mechanical failures, which that alone shows how these manufacturers are confident with their products. Make sure when you get to get these installed by a professional locksmith.

8 Simple Home Repairs Tips To Ensure Your Residential Security

There are many simple things that you can do to ensure that your house is Kitchener Home Securityprotected. From calling a residential locksmith to install a simple deadbolt lock to trimming your bushes, the simple home repairs and improvements that you can make to your house can be a simple way of ensuring that your house is protected and secure against burglary.

  1. The simplest thing that you can do to ensure the safety of your house is by ensuring that the locking system around your house is comprehensive. Ensure that all of your windows have locks, as many windows don’t come with locks installed on them and are easily slid open by burglars. Even simple lock is more than enough to deter a burglar.
  2. Change the latch lock on your doors to deadbolt locks to ensure that your doors are completely impenetrable to all but those willing to actually break down the door. Many burglars are easily able to slip a credit card between the door and jamb in order to depress the tongue of the latch, allowing them easy entrance. A deadbolt is impossible to open without the key, and you can be sure that your house will be protected if you use a deadbolt.
  3. Make sure that there is not a lot of space between your door and its frame, as that is often inviting to thieves to jimmy the lock. Use plywood or paneling to ensure that there is only the space between the door and frame that is required to allow the door to open easily.
  4. Some houses have the door hinges installed on the outside of the house, and you should take care to install the hinges inside the house if that is the case in your house. Having hinges on the outside is practically begging thieves to take your door off of its hinges, and you should take precautions by installing the hinges on the inside.
  5. If you have a number of sliding glass doors in your house, you can easily make them impossible for burglars to open by placing a metal or wooden bar in the sliding track. If you make the bar as long as or slightly longer than the glass sliding door, you can ensure that the door cannot be opened.
  6. Glass windows and sliding doors can easily be broken, and you need to take precautions against a thief desperate enough to break glass. Simply install locks that require a key to open, and you should also install fortified glass in your sliding windows.
  7. Always take care of any rotting wooden door or window frames. Burglars can pry or cut through the rot fairly easily, so it is important to perform regular upkeep on your house. Not only will you ensure that it looks good, you will also be taking precautions against burglary.
  8. Cover or frost your garage windows to impede the burglar’s ability to tell whether your car is inside or not. Always keep your garage door closed and tightly locked, regardless of whether your car is in the garage or not.

Locking all of your doors when you head out is a good habit to maintain, but so is not forgetting your keys as well. Getting locked out of the house can be a huge inconvenience especially if you cannot reach anybody who has a spare. Your last hope would be a residential locksmith who has the knowledge and tools to bail you out of that situation.

Contacting a Locksmith

Being residential, locksmiths shouldn’t be very far away. In fact, it is part of Kitchener Residential Locksmithstheir job to be available every day of the week in order to promptly respond to emergencies. However, you need to get that person’s attention and it is very unlikely for you to have a contact number in your wallet or phone book. Your best bet is to find a place with an Internet connection so you can search for local locksmiths online or search phone directories or local company websites for assistance.

Going for the best possible deal should be the least of your concerns right now since you may need to get in your house immediately. You can always evaluate the first person you ask assistance so you can figure out if you want that individual to handle any lock picking or security-related needs on a later date. The best locksmiths should respond in a 10 minute period.

Letting a Locksmith Assist

It is the responsibility of a locksmith to prepare every possible tool for any situation. A good majority of these tools are designed to open virtually any type of lock on a door. If the locksmith runs into any difficulty in opening the lock due to higher durability, the locksmith may resort to a drill or saw for last minute. This does damage the door and you will need a lock replacement afterward but you can use that as a chance to upgrade your locking mechanism. Plus the method is so much faster than dealing with lock picking manually.

Asking a Locksmith for Assistance

Since most locksmiths possess a lot of security knowledge including the ability to lockup, you can treat these individuals as security advisers. It is part of their job after all so feel free to ask for other ideas on how to make the home more secure. He or she may suggest some ideas that you may have never thought of such. Let the professional do the examinations and have him or her study your area in order to discover any potential spots where the burglar can exploit. The locksmith may even point you to the best deals in your local area so you can buy a surveillance camera or something along the lines quickly.

This goes to show that lock pickers are not only there for emergencies. Their versatility alone should be enough to get a business card or contact number from the professional. Once everything is in order, check your setup one last time and address any concerns to the lock picker

Securing your business or commercial property is essential to protecting your employees and your investment. A certified locksmith provides a number of specialized services and products to help reduce employee theft and improve security at your place of business.

Personnel changes account for much of the employee theft and inventory lost from businesses in Canada As employees come and go, they often forget to turn in their keys and even when they do, you have no idea how many copies have been made and given out to others. As a business owner, it is crucial that you have control over who has access to your property at all times. Rekeying your locks should be done immediately to maintain the security of your office or facility.

Commercial property owners have similar issues as their tenants move in an out throughout the year. There is no way to know how many keys have been issued by a tenant and given out to friends and family. As soon as a tenant vacates the property, have a locksmith rekey the lock to prevent access. This will secure your property and make it safe for the next tenant.

A certified locksmith can create a master key system for commercial property owners.

This allows each tenant to have his or her own individual key to open the door to the leased space. The property manager will then have a master key that allows him or her to access all of the doors on the property. This gives individual tenants the protection they need while still permitting access to the property owner or manager. The master key system is often used in apartment and office buildings.

Business owners need to have a licensed locksmith to call should there be any damage to their locks. Weak or malfunctioning locks can greatly reduce the security of your building. If a key accidentally gets stuck or broken inside the lock, a locksmith can perform key extraction to restore the lock back into working order. Emergency services are also available should you need a locksmith in a hurry or during non-working hours.

A locksmith is a highly trained individual who can install and repair push-pull paddles that are often found in commercial properties, as well as crash bars and exit devices. Even magnetic locking systems for “buzzer entry” of doors are no match for a trained locksmith. He can also make recommendations for products or services that will increase the security of your building and protect your property.

Be sure to secure the interior of your office space as well with locks for cabinets and desks.

These type of security measures may prevent theft from occurring during the workday while employees are left unattended.

A locksmith is a valuable tool for securing commercial property and places of business. Whether you are a small, local business with only an office or a national company with a sprawling campus, security should be a top priority. Call a local locksmith who is highly trained to assist you with all of your commercial security needs.
